In celebration of World Creativity and Innovation Day, Alchemy Inspiration has announced a continent-wide call to action linking creativity with liberation, opportunity and inclusive growth — culminating on Freedom Day.
Observed globally on Tuesday, 21 April, World Creativity and Innovation Day was established by the United Nations to raise awareness of the role of creativity and innovation in all aspects of human development.
In South Africa, this message carries special resonance as it leads into Freedom Day on Monday, 27 April, marking the nation's first democratic elections and the enduring pursuit of equality and human dignity, says the organisation.
According to the organisation, Nelson Mandela's statement, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world," and his belief that knowledge and liberation are inseparable aims to lie at the heart of this year's celebration — an affirmation that creativity, like education, is a pathway to freedom and transformation.
This year, Alchemy Inspiration is intentionally connecting the two milestones under a unified theme, "Creativity as Freedom". The initiative aims to emphasise that creativity is not only an economic driver but a powerful force for social transformation, identity and agency across the African continent, adds the organisation.
"Creativity is one of the most powerful expressions of freedom we have," says Dr Puleng Makhoalibe, CEO of Alchemy Inspiration. "As we commemorate World Creativity and Innovation Day and move toward Freedom Day, we are reminded that innovation thrives where people are empowered to think, question and imagine without limitation. Africa's future will be shaped by those who dare to create it."
Dr. Puleng has been at the forefront of aiming to advance creativity as a strategic capability across business, education and society. Her work spans global platforms and collaborations, including contributions to the global recognition of World Creativity and Innovation Day, thought leadership on fostering creativity in business, and participation in international forums such as the Creative Problem Solving Institute, says the organisation.
She has also served on the board of the Creative Education Foundation, now a global steward of World Creativity and Innovation initiatives, and has been recognised among the top 100 women globally advancing creativity, adds the organisation.
To mark this period between Tuesday, 21 April and Monday, 27 April, Alchemy Inspiration is launching a series of initiatives designed to celebrate and amplify African creativity across sectors.
#IamCreative_Imbizo Webinar Series
Beginning on Freedom Day (Monday, 27 April at 18:00), Alchemy Inspiration will host a webinar series under the theme, #IamCreative_imbizo. The inaugural session, titled, "Creativity: Our Superpower in the Age of AI," will aim to explore how individuals and organisations can harness creativity to remain relevant and resilient in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

Dr. Puleng's call this year is clear: to position Alchemy Inspiration as a platform for celebrating African creativity at scale — one that connects thinkers, makers, scientists and leaders in shaping a more innovative and inclusive future, says the organisation.
"Freedom without creativity is incomplete," she concludes. "As we reflect on our history and envision our future, we must invest in the ideas, people and platforms that allow African creativity to thrive, not just locally, but globally."
